Gift aid reviews

We can help organise your Gift Aid.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a UK government scheme that allows charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers. Donations made to your charity are normally made after the donor has paid tax - with Gift Aid you can reclaim that tax.

Gift Aid has a highly positive impact for charities. Reclaiming Gift Aid can significantly boost funding. For example, if a donor donates £80 to your charity, that's normally because they received £100 and paid £20 of tax on it. With the Gift Aid scheme, your charity can receive that £20 of tax back from HMRC. This comes at no cost to the donor or the charity.

Frequently asked questions for Gift Aid

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a UK government scheme that allows charities to reclaim tax on donations made by UK taxpayers. This means that for every £1 your eligible donors donate, we can claim an extra 25p of income to your charity.

How does Gift Aid work?

When a UK taxpayer makes a donation to your charity and fills out a Gift Aid declaration form, your charity can reclaim the basic rate of tax (currently 20%) on their donation. Your charity must submit an online claim to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to receive these additional funds.

Who is eligible for Gift Aid?

To be eligible for Gift Aid, the donor must:

  • Be a UK taxpayer.
  • Have paid enough Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover the amount your charity will reclaim on their donations in the tax year.
  • Provide the charity with a completed Gift Aid declaration form, which includes name, address, and confirmation that they are a UK taxpayer.

What is a Gift Aid declaration?

A Gift Aid declaration is a statement confirming that the donor wants their donation to be treated as a Gift Aid donation. This form typically includes full name, home address, and confirmation that the donor has paid or will pay enough tax to cover the Gift Aid amount. This form can be filled out online, and we can help you get setup with an easy to fill form which your donors can fill out in less than 2 minutes.

Can charities apply Gift Aid to past donations?

Yes, charities can apply Gift Aid to donations made in the past four years, provided donors were a UK taxpayer during that time and have completed a Gift Aid declaration. Declarations can be retrospective so we can track eligible donations and ask donors to fill out forms for them.

Do charities need to make a separate Gift Aid declaration for each donation?

No, a single Gift Aid declaration can cover all past, present, and future donations to a charity.

Can Gift Aid be claimed on all types of donations?

Gift Aid can be claimed on most monetary donations made by individuals who pay UK tax. However, it cannot be claimed on donations made by companies, donations of goods or services, or donations made on behalf of someone else or a group.

What are the benefits of Gift Aid to charities?

Gift Aid significantly increases the value of donations at no extra cost to the donor. For example, a £100 donation becomes £125 with Gift Aid. This additional income will help you fund your work and support your beneficiaries more effectively.

Is there a limit to how much can be claimed through Gift Aid?

There is no limit to the amount that can be claimed through Gift Aid as long as the donations are eligible and the donor has paid enough tax to cover the reclaimed amount.
